We have been lucky enough to get hold of a video tape of the extras
for "Season one" of "Star Trek: the Next Generation". Although this
gives us no idea about the technical quality of the final DVD's it does
give us an opportunity to look at just what the extras will contain. Are
these just fillers and rehashes of older material. The answer to that is
a resounding no, some of the material will be familiar to any real
trekker as it has appeared else where, but there is plenty of new
material here to keep even the most dedicated fan happy. Even so, it's
nice to see all the material collected in one place and no of course
with DVD you will get even easier access to it through the DVD menus.
Lets take a look at what the tape contained.
The Beginning 18 minutes.
This is a look at the genesis of Stra Trek The Next Generation. Most of
the material seems to have been shot in and around September 28th 1987.
So there are interviews with Gene Rodenberry and Robert Justman about
how they where persuaded to come back to work on Star Trek. You'll also
get to see Patrick Stewart in full "English mode" talking about cottages
in Stratford and early memories of Star trek on the TV. You'll also see
the crew right at the start of the voyage as they start to bound to form
the crew we later came to love. I'm sure I've seen a lot of these
interviews before some where but I'm not sure where ! However there are
interviews with almost all of the cast but perhaps two the most
fascinating are Denise Crosby and Marina Sirtis who describe how they
swapped roles when the final reading came. Of course anyone who has
never heard Marina talk out of character is in for a bit of a shock when
she starts to talk, her voice is just so different, especially when
compared to her slightly exaggerated performance of the first series.
There is lots of behind the scenes material here though, including
large scale models of the Enterprise being built and shot against a
white background ready for stars being added. You'll also see the
Enterprise being shot for the warp drive effect. Most of the material
showing the special effects is new to me (and I thought I'd seen a lot
of TNG material), especially the material from "Encounter at Farpoint".
This piece really does look at the start of the series, all the actors
are frank and open and of course they have no idea how successful the
series is going to become. This really gives the piece real feeling of
"history" and only towards the end does the piece get sentimental about
Gene Rodenberry in interviews probably shot after his death.
Selected Crew Analysis 15minutes 27 seconds
This is a series of interviews mostly from the start of series 1
(witness Jonathan Frakes without his beard) with the cast explaining
everything from how they got the role and of course who their characters
are. Patrick Stewart is as fascinating as ever explaining how his role
is a exploration of personal power. Brent Spiner's interview does appear
to have been shot after the end of series seven, but then Brent has
never been known for giving long in depth interviews about his role of
Data. You will of course see the cast without make up, Michael Dorn with
out his Klingon Makeup, LeVar Burton without his visor etc.
These are a great set of interviews that really get behind the
characters some of which are surprising, especially watch out for Marina
Sirtis towards the end of the piece with some of the biggest sparkly
earrings you've ever seen ! It's especially nice to see some of the
"prodigal sons" from the series Denise Crosby and Wil Wheaton making an
appearance.
The Making of a Legend. 15 minutes 36 seconds
Basically this piece are more interviews and behind the scenes shots
concentrating on the sets and props from the first series. However the
interviews concentrate on the crew who created the infects such as Dan
Curry who speaks in retrospect about materials used to create the
effects. Remember these effects where generated before computer graphics
where prevalent in TV series. So you'll hear how a bowling ball and
falling salt where used to create force field effects. You'll also hear
how the transporter effects where created . You'll also see Herman
Zimmerman and Mike Okuda talk about the original graphic design
especially about control panels and other displays on the enterprise.
There are of course a few shots of production drawings and behind the
scenes look at putting makeup on the actors.
Memorable Missions 17 minutes 13 seconds
This is exactly what you would expect, the cast and crew are
interviewed about their memories from series one. Thus you'll here
Jonathan Frakes talk about his immersion in black gunk in "Skin of
Evil", LeVar Burton talk about "Heart of Glory", the first time we see
through Gordie's visor. Patrick Stewart chooses to talk about "Where no
man has gone before", it seems Jonathan Frakes had a line he simply
could not say which causes hysteria to spread around the set. This piece
is full of surprises, I done want to spoil them for you but I'm sure all
fans will be delighted by this material. Hey, you even get to see Armin
Shimerman talk about his appearance in the series.
The way these programs are presented suggests that the style will be
repeated on later box sets using interviews and behind the scenes from
that series. Looks like we are in for seven great box sets.

Personellement, ça me dérange pas...
PS : T'es fan de ST, Oz ?
